Here are some notes for a few free or open source object-oriented FEA programs that I’ve taken at least a quick look at. It’s a fair question. If such a program is readily available and equally powerful as those in commercial packages, I would consider it worthwhile to train myself and students with the open source code for the purpose of research even for an analyst.
